1. Designate a place for homework to be done. Most families choose to have their children work at the kitchen table. Make sure they have room to spread out if needed.

2. Ensure that all of the materials your child needs are readily accessible. Paper, pencils, crayons, markers, scissors, glue, etc.

3. Schedule a consistent homework time. Most kids usually need a 15-20 minute break when they get home from school or extracurricular activities

4. Encourage your child to have a snack, get comfortable and unwind before hitting the books.

5. To help your child focus, create a library-like atmosphere during homework time. Their work space should be quiet and well lit. Eliminate distractions like television and any additional noise that may draw your child’s attention.

6. Be available but don’t hover. Too much help can prevent some of the positive effects of homework. Allow your child to develop independent learning skills. Remember your job is to provide guidance not answers. If you notice your child is struggling or getting frustrated, be supportive.

7. Build in breaks. A planned break between reading and math might be the motivator your child needs to keep plugging along.

8. Boost your child’s learning potential by making books an integral part of their lives. The more kids read, the better they read. Encourage your child to read for pleasure every day.  Take regular trips to your local library or book store. Both typically have reading programs that will keep reading fun and exciting.

9. Work closely with your child’s teacher.  Whether by phone or email stay connected to your child’s lessons. This will allow you to get ahead of your child’s academic weaknesses and focus your attention in the areas they need it.
